Being a godparent is more than a cultural or symbolic role played out on the day of Baptism. In The Gift of Godparents: More than Cards and Present myths are discussed  with answers to practical questions. Sign-in to FORMED to watch.

A Godparent should be a Catholic of good standing, that is, living the Gospel message in their daily personal lives. They should practice the faith regularly attending Mass every Sunday and be willing to support the person and/or parents in growing in their Catholic faith. A Godparent may not be one of the parent, must be at least 16 years of age, have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and have the intention to assume this role. Only one Godparent is needed for baptism but our tradition generally has two: one man and one woman. One of the Godparents must be a practicing Catholic, while the other could be a Christian Witness who is a validly baptized non- Catholic and who practices their faith in Christ in a visible and sincere manner.
